Parboiled rice (also known as converted rice) is rice that has been partially boiled in the husk. The three basic steps of parboiling are soaking, steaming and drying. These steps also make rice easier to process by hand, boost its nutritional profile and change its texture. About 50% of the world’s paddy production is parboiled. The treatment is practiced in many parts of the world such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Guinea, South Africa, Italy, Spain, Nigeria, Senegal, Thailand, Switzerland, USA and France etc.

Rice husk is one of the by-products produced during in rice processing. The combustion of rice husk is over 70%, and its calorific value is about 12.5~14.6KJ / kg, which is about half that of standard coal. Therefore, rice husk is a convenient and a cheap renewable energy source. Rice husk has a high volatile component, up to 50, making it is easy to burn. Rice husk has a small bulk density, about 130 kg/m, which makes it inconvenient for transportation, and prone to mildew and fire. The common treatment of rice husks is to be crushed as feed ingredients (with the addition of few nutrients) or directly for heating, but there is still a large number of rice husks left untouched, resulting in pollution of the environment. In this aspect, HTM makes great efforts to the research and the development of rice husks and successfully establishes a biomass/rice husk power generation system, using waste rice husk to generate electricity.
